Often we are lured into programs that offer some kind of trick or gimmick to get us to lose weight quickly. While some of these can give us some short term results, we all know the real long term benefits come from simple healthy habits. What we do day in and day out, whether good or bad, is going to determine how well we maintain (or gain) good health.
Previously I’ve shared 5 Secrets to Losing Weight and 7 Hacks to Better Fitness, and those great ideas are examples of things you can do. Let’s expand that list with even more ideas of what you can do every day to be healthier.
Drink Water
The best no calorie drink around! The benefits of keeping well hydrated and innumerable, but for practice purposes here are a few. First, your body needs the water to maintain good skin, keep body functions like digestion moving along, and you simply feel better. You also have a more consistent feeling of fullness so you are less inclined to snack or overeat. Keep a water bottle with you, drink and refill it many times a day.
Skip Processed and Junk Food
Yeah, I know some of those foods taste oh so good. They have all the things that make our mouths water and satisfy those cravings, but we also know it’s because they have so many bad things in them that our bodies simply get hooked on for all the wrong reasons. Purge your house and your habits of the quick fix options. Bring a brown bag lunch instead of the fast food. Make a meal from raw ingredients instead of the prepared options full of fillers, preservatives and carbs. Once you cleanse these from your system and habits, you’ll be amazed at how much you love and even crave healthier options.
Always Start Your Day with Breakfast
It doesn’t have to be something big or time-consuming, but breakfast is an important way to start your day for many reasons. Consistently fuel your body and mind with good foods and you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel and the more productive your days. I much prefer some kind of activity that gets me moving in a more natural way. Cycling is my current passion, but even that takes time, equipment and getting out somewhere. Functional exercise of most any kind done on a regular basis is going to provide you with great benefits. A daily walk with a spouse or loved one is beneficial on many levels. If you have a furry friend, take that pet out for a regular walk. Explore your area and find new trails or streets in your town or backcountry. Getting outdoors has both mental and physical benefits. Living in an urban environment offers a myriad of streets to explore and buildings you may discover. Whatever you do, do it regularly and even mix it up for a little variety.
Get Regular and Sufficient Sleep
We need sleep, and we need to achieve it on a regular pattern to be truly beneficial. Most people get insufficient sleep and it’s often interrupted or we go to bed at varying times. If you regularly watch late night TV consider turning it off and getting an extra hour or two of sleep. It may allow you to get up earlier and start your day with some exercise. Your body heals better and resists sickness more efficiently when it has sufficient sleep. Again you will be surprised at how much more productive and enjoyable your days will become when you get back on a good schedule of sleep and exercise.
Be Positive
No matter where you are in your healthy efforts, remember to always be positive. It never helps to get down on yourself, only feeling worse about your situation and choices you may have made to get there. Always look forward to improving and making adjustments in your life to become a better version of yourself. Surround yourself with positive people, uplifting reminders and encouragement. Even or especially when you experience setbacks. find a way to extract the good from your situation, learn from it and move forward with a new commitment.
