Coffee Varieties

Coffee comes from a plant or small tree that produces a sort of cherry. Once these fruits are mature, they have to be hand-picked (since they ripe at different times) to later be processed to get your cup of Joe.

Now, there are lots of coffee varieties but two take the spot in the global coffee race: Arabica and Robusta. Each one of them has a particular flavor, aroma and composition profile that makes them unique depending on the place they grow.

Arabica beans

Arabica coffee beans are the most valued ones in the trade. Oval and flat, they have a sweet, acidic and smooth taste in the palate; therefore, their profile is lighter, more fruity and less invasive.

These beans find their home in higher altitudes (between 900 and 2000m), but are also more vulnerable to climate change, pests and other factors, the reason why they are more expensive. Arabica coffee is produced widely in Latin American countries such as Brazil and Colombia.

Robusta beans

These beans are smaller and rounder than arabica, but they pack a bolder, buttery, nutty and bitter taste thanks to the high caffeine content they can hold. These are less expensive in the market, since they are able to grow in lower altitudes (900m and below).

Countries such as Africa, Indonesia and Vietnam are leading producers of this variety. Robusta is a little stronger than Arabica and less prone to pests or issues during its growth.

The many benefits of coffee

Coffee is one of our favorite pick-us-up for many reasons and there is a lot of science behind that too. Let’s explore some of the main health benefits of this magic bean.

Improves performance

Coffee, well, caffeine to be more specific, helps increase the adrenaline levels in our bodies, the reason why it is used as a performance enhancer. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant, once it reaches your brain it increases dopamine levels, leading to more energy, focus, memory, vigilance and reaction times.

Supports longevity

Yes, a recent study found that people who drink between 4-8 coffee cups may slightly have a lower risk of early death. Best of all, that research found that it doesn’t matter if you drink caffeinated or decaf, the benefits are the same.

Makes you less prone to Parkinson’s Disease

Another great benefit of caffeine is that it reduces the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s from 32% to 60%. Studies show that this benefit is most likely to apply to men than women (due to estrogen levels).

Makes you more social

The social benefits of coffee have also been researched. A study reported that people who consume coffee at the workplace have a more positive outlook in life and more assertive interpersonal relationships than those who don’t. Go grab a cup of Joe with your colleagues now!
