Sometimes the thought of settling down in a beautiful beachside town is uncomfortable and too “far-fetched.” The prices can be outrageous, making you feel like you can never fully live out your dreams. Luckily, we have found 5 countries where you can live for less than $1,500 a month!
You may have noticed a spike in people living abroad. Why is that? Because of the price tag! It can be so much cheaper to live in a beach side town in South America than leasing a condo in Florida. The editors at International Living compiled a list of the most affordable places to live out of the United States.
The list accounts for all expenses like food, transportation, housing, and utilities. For couples, the costs of these locations would run somewhere close to $30,000 a year or $2,500 a month. That means under $1,500 per person every month.
Tempted to learn more? The destination of your dreams could be one of these five countries…
Portugal
This country is packed with culture and history. The editor of International Living, Jennifer Stevens, calls it the “best-value living in Western Europe today.” Portugal will provide you with the best bargain prices and the city of Mafra is only 15 minutes from the beaches! Here you will find white sand beaches, a lively downtown nightlife, cafes, bars and beautiful cobbled roads. Take a tour of the beautiful Monserrate Palace, one of the country’s largest national palaces. Enjoy traditional Portuguese fado and folk music while eating an amazing plate of bacalhau, a salted cod fish central to the portuguese diet.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica is known for being extremely welcoming to international residents! It’s also one of the cheapest places to find coastal real estate. Check out the Central Valley when you get there. It’s full of lush landscapes and safe residential communities. You’ll also find quality healthcare and fantastic authentic eateries.
Ecuador
Ecuador’s coastline stretches 530 miles and it’s all filled with inexpensive yet fresh seafood. You’ll find that the country is relaxed and comfortable with plenty of culture. Did you know that the cost of living in Cuenca, Ecuador is around 25 percent of what it costs to live in the United States? There is a scene for everyone in Ecuador. Whether you like comfortable resort towns or fishing villages, you are sure to find a perfect match.
Panama
There is a long list of qualities that draw Americans to Panama. Residence isn’t impossible to obtain, their healthcare facilities are wonderful, they use the U.S. dollar and there are many English speakers. Other than that, the landscape is stunning. Here you will find beautiful ocean coasts, lush mountains, and busy cities. According to International Living, the budget for one person runs somewhere around $1,391 per month.
Cambodia
You can find a one-bedroom apartment in the capital of Cambodia for only $250 per month. Compare that to over $2,000 per month in New York City. That price alone is pretty tempting. Not to mention the amazing and exotic lifestyle and scenery. Find traditional foods and a laid-back coastline. There is a large community of international residents waiting for more fun!
