Ok admit it. You indulged and enjoyed some holiday food and treats. It’s part of the festivities for most of us and usually results in that waistline feeling just a bit more snug this time of year. I won’t say we all do it, but it’s pretty much universally true to some degree. The question is, what are you going to do about it?

First before all else, don’t feel guilty about it. That doesn’t do you any good. As I’ve written recently, getting down on ourselves or using negativity for motivation doesn’t do us any good. Instead, embrace where you are and a desire to get back on track and you are started in the right direction. Here are a few tips for what you can do starting today to get back to where you want to be.

Have a Plan

It’s great that you feel motivated to get healthy again and shed some unwanted weight or fat put on over the holidays. Just wanting something doesn’t make it true. You have to act, but acting without a plan results in short term motivated action that dies out quickly. We’ve all seen it with the crowded gyms at the first of the year that become vacant within a few weeks. That roller coaster of effort does your body no good. In fact it can do more harm than good.

So create a plan of what you will do now that is attainable, then what you will build toward in the long term. Decide what are your healthier habits you will start or return to that may have gone away recently. Make time in your schedule for preparing better foods and exercise so it’s in place before other things can interfere. Make a food plan for the upcoming week and actually decide ahead of time not just to eat healthier, but exactly what you’re going to eat in order for that to happen.

Cut Back but don’t go Extreme

First thing you shouldn’t do is go on a crash diet. Just don’t do it. While we want fast results, starving our bodies of everything is an impulse reaction rather than an effective plan to sustain healthier living. Using determination as a catalyst for change is a good thing, and sometimes we tend to want to do something extreme to kickstart our weight loss. The desire is admirable, but that popular cleanse or detox can not only be harmful, but they also are not what is going to help us create long term change.

Find new ways to move more each day.  If we had healthy habits before that just slipped during the holidays, then it’s back to business as usual. Stay On Track, Build on Success

Once you’ve made the commitment and started to work your plan, keep at it. Set and seek realistic goals, and build on the successes you create. Give yourself credit when you earn it, and realize that it’s going to take time to reach your goals when you go about it the right way. It takes us time to slide into those extra pounds, so it’s going to take a little time to work them back off. When you are determined to get back on track and into your healthier habits again, trust that it will pay the dividends when you stick to the plan.
