By Whom and How the UN Got its Name:
The name “United Nations” was coined by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and was first used during the Second World War. The Charter of the United Nations was signed on June 26, 1945 (in San Francisco) at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on October 24, 1945.
The Mission and Work of the UN
Unique International Character: Currently, the UN is made up of 193 Member States. Due to the powers vested in the UN, and its unique international character, the United Nations can take action on the issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and health emergencies, gender equality, and so much more.
Maintenance of International Peace and Security: The United Nations came into being in 1945 following the devastation of the Second World War, with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security. The UN does this by working to prevent conflict, helping parties in conflict make peace, peacekeeping, and creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish. These activities often overlap and should reinforce one another, to be effective. The UN Security Council has the primary responsibility for international peace and security.
Problem Solving Mechanism: The UN also provides a forum for its members to express their views in the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and other bodies and committees. By enabling dialogue between its members, and by hosting negotiations, the UN has become a mechanism for governments to find areas of agreement and solve problems together.
Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms: One of the main priorities of the United nations was to achieve international co-operation in solving international problems, as well as promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all – without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion. The promotion and protection of human rights is a key purpose, and guiding principle, of the UN. In 1948, “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights” was brought into the realm of international law. Since, then, the Organization has diligently protected human rights through legal instruments and on-the-ground activities.
Deliverance of Humanitarian Aid: The UN’s first mission was during the aftermath of the Second World War, on the devastated continent of Europe, which it helped to rebuild. The UN is now relied upon by the international community to coordinate humanitarian relief operations, due to natural and man-made disasters.

The UN will celebrate another extraordinary event marking its anniversary, as renowned artist Crostobal Gabarron unveils his monument entitled “Enlightened Universe” in New York’s famed Central Park. The monument is an interactive sculpture formed by a sphere and surrounded by a spiral of 70 figures – one for each of the 70 years since the UN was created. After its display in New York, the artwork will be displayed in other major cities across the globe. Images and videos of the lighted structures will be part of an innovative social media outreach and will be seen by millions of people around the world.
