Chai – What Is It and Where Did It Originate?

Chai (rhymes with ‘pie’) is the word used for tea in many different parts of the world. It is a centuries-old tea beverage which has played an important role in many cultures. Chai from India is a spiced milk tea that has become increasingly popular across the globe and is generally made of; rich black tea, heavy milk, a combination of various spices and a sweetener of some kind. The spices used can vary from region to region (and household to household), but the most common are cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and pepper.

Ancient Courts and A King’s Concoction:

Chai is the lifeblood, and the national drink of India. The history of Chai tea dates back 5,000 years to the ancient courts of Siam and India. Legend has it that a king concocted a recipe in a quest to create a healing beverage. Since that time, authentic Chai tea is used in the healing tradition of “ayurveda” alternative medicine. In India, guests are known as “emissaries of God,” they drop by any time they want without warning. When they come, you serve! And, it’s almost always Chai that is served up hot and steamy. “Chai” is the Hindi word for “tea” but it really means the well-known sweetened spiced milk-tea of India.
