Froth of the morning from ORGANO™- it’s Frappe Day!   Frappé is pronounced “frah-pay” (“frap” for short), and while the name may be of French descent, history says it’s the Greeks who popularized this icy, cool and creamy, coffee treat.  Today is the day – to join ORGANO™ in the celebration, and exploration, of the miraculous concoction known as Frappé and coveted worldwide.

The Meaning Behind Frappé:  The word frappé is French and comes from the verb frapper (which means to hit or strike).  However,  when describing the drink – frappé means chilled, as with ice cubes in a shaker.  Simply put, it is a Greek, foam-covered, iced coffee drink made from an instant coffee blend by shaking (or mixing in a blender), then pouring into a tall glass filled with ice cubes. The original frappé was once a centerpiece of the French brasserie’s coffee and dessert repertoires.  In 1848, the word frappé first appeared in the American English Dictionary.

The Accidental Invention of Frappé: While most people would consider the traditional “Greek” frappé a light-hearted beverage, symbolizing relaxation on a hot summer day, but the frappé we’ve grown to love and adore today had a less than glamorous birth.  The invention of frappé is the stuff of mythology, and according to most sources, it was invented 58 years ago and supposedly by accident, as an off-the-cuff solution due to a lack of hot water.  Frappé made its debut at the 1957 International Trade Fair in Thessaloniki (a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea), when an employee by the name of Dimitrios Vakondios (allegedly) wanted to have his instant coffee, and when he couldn’t find hot water, he put it into a shaker with some chilled aqua.

The All American Classic Frappé: Frappes are typically coffee flavored, and like many foods, regional differences may affect the definition of a shake or a frappe.  Coffee shops across the country offer cold, creamy frappes, while the local ice cream parlor serves up old-fashioned milkshakes. Both treats are milk based and served with a straw. Milkshakes typically come in classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.  In greater Boston, a milkshake is milk and syrup shaken until frothy, while a frappe is the same thing with ice cream added. All the while, a frappe is a milkshake for the rest of the state and in many parts of the United States.

Give It A Whirl In Your Shaker: To create your own frappé, get out your cocktail shaker or hand mixer to make this infamous frothy drink. First, make two cups of your favorite ORGANO™ brew and let it chill out. Frappe ORGANO™ on Ice 

8 oz of Selected ORGANO™ Brew (Chilled)

3 Tablespoons of Almond, Coconut or Skim Milk

1 Teaspoon of  Pure Vanilla Extract

Sweeten to taste, then literally “shake it up”  until all of your ingredients are nice and frothy, pour over ice cubes and add a dash of nutmeg or cinnamon to top it off – if you so please. 

Frozen Frappe ala ORGANO™ 

2 Cups of Frozen ORGANO™ Coffee Cubes

3 Tablespoons of Almond, Coconut or Skim Milk (or Fat Free Creamer)

1 Teaspoon of Pure Vanilla Extract  (Hazelnut or Peppermint Extract  are Tasty Too)

Sweeten to taste, then blend all ingredients together in a blender, until the frosty mixture is combined to the right consistency.  Finally pour in a tall glass, sprinkle with coco powder or a dollop of whipped cream ( if you dare). 

Easy Mocha ORGANO™ Frappé 

This three ingredient mocha frappe is made with any ORGANO™ cold brew coffee, milk ice cubes, and a dash of chocolate syrup:

1 Sachet of ORGANO™ Gourmet Café Mocha (Chilled)

8 Ice Cubes Made From Milk

2-4 Tablespoons of Light Chocolate Syrup


  1. Prepare your ORGANO™ Gourmet Café Mocha – place in a bowl, top it with 4 cups of water and place it in the refrigerator overnight. Strain in the morning and reserve the leftover in the fridge.
  2. Prepare milk ice cubes in advance by pouring your milk of choice in an ice cube tray, covering lightly with saran wrap, and freezing over night. Choose non-dairy milk to make this vegan friendly, or a 2% for an extra creamy texture.
  3. In the morning, place your chilled ORGANO™ Gourmet Café Mocha, 8 milk ice cubes and as much chocolate sauce as desired in a blender and blend until smooth. Serve and enjoy immediately!

And, there you have it – talk about whipping things into a frenzy with decedent results – a cold brewed frappe that rivals any coffee house offering.  In other words, a creamy, bold and delicious frappé – is certainly a good morning indeed!

Once popular only in Greece (especially during the summer), this international coffee sensation has become infamous on a worldwide basis. Shaken, not stirred, whether on ice or frozen – serve it up  ORGANO™ style; pour into a frosty tall glass – put a straw in it – and call it a frappé!   Opa!
